Anthony J. Picarello, general counsel of the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops, will give a special lecture at the Ave Maria School of Law Friday on "Lingering Legal and Moral Issues in Health Care Reform." The talk begins at 12:20 p.m. in the St. Thomas More Commons room 110. Later Friday, at 3 p.m., Bishop Frank Dewane will celebrate a "Red Mass" for members of the legal profession at St. Agnes Church. It will be the first "Red Mass" in Collier County.
They were born 50 years apart, but Mellina Fortunato, 18, and John Arceri, 68, are sharing the same experience this fall as first-year law students at the Ave Maria School of Law. They are among the youngest and oldest first-year law students ever in the state of Florida.

The farmworkers organization, which has been advocating for many years for increased payment to farmworkers, reached an agreement with Pacific Tomato Growers. Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski congratulated both sides and said he applauded "the courage and commitment of all of the leaders in these two groups" and said he hoped for "sustained change and social responsibility for the industry." Bear populations are increasing in the state, and sightings of bears have occurred in Ave Maria, throughout southwest Florida - even recently in the city of Naples. There's a public meeting Oct. 12 in Naples on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission's plans for bear management, but the FWC says the primary way to keep bears away is for residents to take steps to remove things that attract them.

Bishop Frank Dewane was a guest Wednesday at a class on Catholic Social Teaching taught by Economics Professor Joseph Burke. The bishop held a question-and-answer session with the students in the classroom, then the class adjourned to The Bean (above) where Bishop Dewane treated the students to beverages.
The Donahue Academy Shamrocks had another big offensive showing Saturday, beating Island Christian 55-27 in a game at Islamorada. Donahue led 28-21 at the half, but coach Rich Scanlon said the team "made some defensive adjustments" and had a big second half. The win improves Donahue's record to 5-1. The final league game of the season is next weekend at Miami Christian School.
A diverse selection of films will be screened for the Ave Maria community throughout the school year, with a talk and discussion afterward led by different scholars in the casual atmosphere of the Queen Mary Pub.

Author and AMU Literature Professor Joseph Pearce spoke to an overflow crowd Tuesday night at the Ave Maria Founders Club meeting at The Bean. Prof. Pearce spoke of his conversion experience -- from British skinhead to well-regarded author and university professor. A large group heard his speak on that topic recently at the Ft.
