Haitian Presidential Candidate to Visit Ave Maria

jeudy1Haitian politician Wilson Jeudy (left), one of about 20 candidates for president in Haiti's elections later this year, is coming to Ave Maria Sept. 22.

Mr. Jeudy will be attending a wine and cheese reception at The Bean at 7:15 p.m. Sept. 22, at which he will talk about Haiti's efforts to recover from the devastating earthquake earlier this year and be available to answer questions about current conditions in the impoverished country, and his views on its future. All are welcome at the reception, and there is no charge.

Ave Maria is one of several stops Mr. Jeudy will be making in southwest Florida, where his aides say he wants to thank residents of the area for their generosity to the Haitian earthquake recovery efforts. Mr. Jeudy is mayor of Delmas, one of the municipalities that make up the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, which is near the epicenter of the earthquake that struck in January. He also will speak to the Rotary Club in Naples and visit Florida Gulf Coast University.

jeanHis appearance in Ave Maria was arranged by town resident Reid Carpenter, who, through the work of his Leadership Foundation of America in Haiti, knows Mr. Jeudy's campaign manager.

Haiti's national elections are set for Nov. 28 and there have been numerous charges of malfeasance that have been characteristic of politics in the country. More than a dozen candidates were declared ineligible to run in August, including Hatian-born hip-hop star Wyclef Jean (right).
