Residents of southwest Florida have been hearing first-hand about the challenges in Haiti as one of the candidates for president of the country, Wilson Jeudy, has been touring the area.
Mr. Jeudy, one of 19 candidates in the Nov. 28 presidential election, told about 80 people at The Bean of Ave Maria earlier this week that his goals are to reorganize Haiti's disfunctional government, reduce corruption and, in the longer term, make Haity self-sustaining. Mr. Jeudy's appearances in Ave Maria, Naples and Fort Myers had "quite an exceptional impact," said Reid Carpenter, an Ave Maria resident who founded the charitable organization Leadership Foundations of America and got to know Mr. Jeudy through the work of an associate group in Haiti, the Hatian Leadership Foundation.
"He's the real deal," Mr. Carpenter said. "He is touring parts of the United States so that people who care about Haiti will have a chance to meet him, and to try to get people in Haitian communities here to get the word back to their friends and relatives in Haiti." At left, Mr. Carpenter poses with Mr. Jeudy (L) and Frank Legrand (R) from Immokalee.
Members of the Haitian community in Immokalee made up about half the crown who attended Mr. Jeudy's appearance at The Bean and Mr. Carpenter described his conversations with them in Creole French as "highly animated."
Mr. Jeudy has been involved in governmental affairs in Haiti for many years and currently is mayor of Delmas, one of the municipalities in the capital of Port-au-Prince.
He currently is in Miami and will conclude his trip to the United States in New York next week.
