The AMU Film Society's final showing of the fall term is the 2000 Coen Brothers movie O Brother, Where Art Thou, a story with a Homeric theme set in the Deep South during the Great Depression. The screening is at 6:30 p.m. in the lecture hall of the academic building, with a lecture and discussion afterward at The Bean led by economics professor Dr. Joseph Burke. UPDATE: Gov.-elect Rick Scott's support is vital for the jackson Lab project to proceed, Barron Collier executive Blake Gable said Tuesday. Mr. Gable told Jeff Lytle of the Naples Daily News that he did not know where Mr. Scott stands on the matter at this time, but discussions will be held with the governor-elect in the new year. "If the governor is questionable and doesn't think it's a good idea, I'm not interested in moving forward," Mr. Gable said.

Some Ave Maria residents are sponsoring a forum the evening of Dec. 14 to discuss several aspects of the controversial project including matters relating to ethics, town development and specifics of genetics science. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at The Bean of Ave Maria.

The Ave Maria Hometown Band and Orchestra will perform their winter concert Saturday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m. in the Ave Maria University student union ballroom.  The Collier County Sheriff's Office is working with Ave Maria resident Tom DiFlorio to start a program called Community Volunteer Patrols in Ave Maria. As part of the program, which is already operating in many other areas of the county, volunteers patrol neighborhoods in a marked car to deter crime and report suspicious activity. The Collier County Planning Commission heard from several Ave Maria residents Thursday morning before voting to approve shifting the location of 50 commercially-zoned acres to a site on Oil Well Rd. proposed for construction of the Jackson Laboratory facility. The change still needs approval from the Board of County Commissioners.

Former major league catcher Johnny Bench has established a scholarship fund to help students attend Ave Maria University, AMU announced Thursday. The hall-of-famer (left) has headlined the university's annual golf fundraiser for the last few years and will do so again at this year's event Dec. 2-3.

In a ceremony unique to the Jesuit order, Fr. Robert McTeigue will make his profession of final vows at a ceremony and Mass in the Ave Maria oratory Saturday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m. Fr. McTeigue will renew the vows he made as a novice almost two decades ago and, he says, "The Society of Jesus will make an unconditional commitment to me."

The Collier County Commissioners voted Tuesday to hire an arbitrator to decide a question of how many commissioners' votes it takes to approve a zoning change necessary for the Jackson Lab development near Ave Maria. The ruling is needed because the dynamics of the board will change soon when a new commissioner who is more skeptical of the Jackson Lab project is seated.
