Freshman Shawna Manchette scored twice and Beth Greve and Eliza Scarnecchia added a goal each as AMU beat Johnson and Wales 4-1 Tuesday in Miami. The women's next game is their home opener Sept. 14 against Palm Beach Atlantic.
The first Ave Maria Founders Club meeting of the new term drew a capacity crowd to The Bean to hear a talk by Dr. Bira Rezende, a politics and business professor at AMU, on the Catholic perspective on socialism. The next founders club will feature literature professor and author Joseph Pearce Sept. 28.

Collier County residents should not expect a referendum on the Jackson Lab project despite the victory in the Tuesday District 2 primary election by Georgia Hiller, who is in favor of one, the Naples Daily News reports. Fred Coyle, a leader in the effort to bring a Jackson Lab facility to the area, won a narrow re-election victory Tuesday night over challenger Lavigne Kirkpatrick in the Republican primary for the District 4 seat. Mr. Coyle received about 54 percent of the vote and is commissioner-elect as there is no challenger in the general election. In the election for the District 2 open seat, Georgia Hiller, who has said there should be a referendum on the proposed $130-million county subsidy for Jackson Labs, won handily and faces independent Chuck Roth in the general election.
