Penny Long and Jonathan Comden only started formal running training a few months ago, but the two Ave Maria teens have already won spots in the National Junior Olympic Championshps.
The two Donahue Academy students both finished in the top ten in their age categories at the Florida state junior olympics held last weekend in Altamonte Springs. They were representing the Ave Maria Track Club, which is made up of cross country and track athletes from Ave Maria University and the Donahue Academy, under the direction of AMU track coach Mike Dewitt.
Penny (right), a 14-year-old freshman at the Donahue Academy, finished second in the women's 4k run with a personal best time of 19:37:40. Jonathan, a 15-year-old sophomore, ran the 5k in 21:52:50.
The track club now is trying to raise money and/or frequent flyer miles to defray the cost of sending Penny, Jonathan and their coaches to the national junior olympics Dec. 11 in Birmingham, AL. Anyone interested in helping out can reach Coach Dewitt at
