The proposed plan to build a Jackson Laboratory research facility near Ave Maria has raised a number of questions within the community and in throughout Collier County.
Residents may be able to get answers to some of those questions at a forum Dec. 14 sponsored by some town residents.
The forum, which organizers are calling a "town hall meeting," will feature speakers that will address ethical, scientific and development matters relating to the project.
"We wanted a forum where residents could hear the facts to help make up their minds about the project," said resident Carlos Figueroa, one of the organizers of the event. The session is sponsored entirely by the residents, who invited the panelists, he said.
The panelists will be:
- Dr. Michael Waldstein, a town resident and the Max Seckler professor of Theology at Ave Maria University, who will speak on ethical questions relating to the project;
- Mike Hyde, the Vice President for Advancement and External Relations at The Jackson Laboratory, who will talk about genetics science and the specifics of what the Jackson Lab does;
- Blake Gable, the president of Barron Collier's Real Estate and Minerals division and the project manager for the Ave Maria development, who will discuss development plans for the Jackson Lab facility as well as the proposed research park the lab project is expected to anchor.
"It will be an open forum, with time for questions and answers," Mr. Figueroa said.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, at The Bean of Ave Maria. Earlier Tuesday, the Board of Collier County Commissioners will consider a zoning application to relocate 50 acres of commercially-zoned property within the Ave Maria Stewardship Community District to the site on Oil Well Rd. proposed for the Jackson Lab.
