Music and Drama from Ave Maria Youth This Weekend

Young people from Ave Maria will be performing this weekend with the Ave Maria Hometown Band's fall/winter concert Saturday and the Ave Children's Theater performance of the Dickens classic A Christmas Carol Sunday.
The hometown band concert Saturday at 1 p.m. in the AMU student union ballroom will feature the debut performances of two new groups -- a beginner's band and an orchestra -- in addition to the original hometown band. The orchestra was scheduled to perform Handel's rousing La Rejouissance, a selection from Rossini's Barber of Seville, and what band founder Mary Stuller calls "a very special Christmas festival arrangement," among other pieces. A quartet from Florida Gulf Coast University will also perform.
The band will play mainly patriotic pieces, Mrs. Stuller said, along with a few Christmas selections.
More than 50 young musicians play in the bands and orchestra. Tickets can be purchased at Mrs. Stuller's Ave Maria Inspirations shop on Annunciation Circle, or online at the band's website here. The ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future -- along with other well-known characters -- will be onstage Sunday and again Thursday, Dec. 9, in the presentation of A Christmas Carol by the Ave Children's Theater.
The play features about 25 performers ranging in age from five to 15, according to the organization's director, Karen Ledesma. The performances are at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in the AMU student union ballroom. Tickets can be purchased at the Ave Maria Dance Academy, over the phone, or online.
