 A controlled burn by the Florida Department of Forestry Wednesday morning east of the Ave Maria town center created a great deal of smoke but was not a cause for concern.

Hard-throwing right-hander Justin James has been named the Player of the Week in the Sun Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for his 19-strikeout performance Saturday against Webber International. He's the first Ave Maria University baseball player to receive a Sun Conference Player of the Week honor.

Cardinal William Levada, Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican, will be the principal celbrant at the Baccalaureate Mass before Ave Maria University's commencement exercises May 7. The commencement speaker later in the day will be Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

 The fourth annual Swampfest battle of the bands drew students and town residents ranging in age from babes in arms to adults to the Ave Maria town center Saturday night. Above, two younger residents manage to sleep through the music that blared from the stage across from the Queen Mary Pub.
 The Ave Maria Choraliers entertained with their Irish Program on St. Patrick's Day at several nursing homes in Naples, and reprised their performance at Del Webb later in the day.

 Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life presided Thursday at the mass marking the sixth anniversary of Terri Schiavo's death by court-ordered dehydration and starvation. It was the third year "Terri's Day" was observed with a mass at the Ave Maria oratory, attended by many members of Ms. Schiavo's family.  An exhibition of 21 photographs by Ave Maria resident Tony Schweikle opened Sunday at the headquarters of the Ave Maria Foundation for the Arts.

 Showing a musical side unknown to many of her students, Ave Maria University philosophy professor Dr. Maria Fedoryka picked up a fiddle and performed Saturday night with the Celtic-rock group Scythian outside the student union.  An enthusiastic crowd thronged the Ave Maria town center Friday for the official unveling and dedication of the large marble bas-relief depicting The Annunciation on the oratory in the center of town. A mass, Eucharistic procession and dedication ceremony also celebrated the third anniversary of the formation of the quasi-parish community in Ave Maria. Above the sculpture is revealed.

 Ave Maria University will be host again this year for Musica Sacra Florida's annual conference on Gregorian Chant, April 1-2. Jim Coletta, who has represented the Collier County Commission district that includes Ave Maria since 2000, has announced he will seek re-election in 2012. Mr. Coletta, 68, lives with his family in Golden Gate Estates. The primary next year is Aug. 28, 2012 and the general election is Nov. 6, 2012.

The board of trustees of Ave Maria University has made Jim Towey's appointment as CEO of the school effective this week, rather than waiting until the scheduled date of July 1, AMU founder Tom Monaghan announced Tuesday night at a dinner attended by university supporters. "I wanted to give him a free rein right away," Mr. Monaghan said.
