Barron Collier has completed the transfer of ownership of 21 acres of land off Oil Well Rd. in Ave Maria for Arthrex to build a manufacturing plant that is expected to employ 150 people. Arthrex Vice President Scott Price told the Naples Daily News that he hopes construction can begin at the end of this year or early 2012. Above, an artist's rendering of the plant. Ave Maria University has announced that Dr. Louis Traina has been appointed the school's new Vice President of Institutional Advancement, responsible for the university's fund-raising efforts. He held a similar position at Hodges University for more than a decade.

The Ave Maria University Gyrenes play their first home game -- the first college football game ever in Southwest Florida -- at noon at Palmetto Ridge High School on Oil Well Rd. Author and philosopher Michael Novak will be at The Queen Mary Pub in the Ave Maria town center Sunday, Sept. 18, at 8 p.m. He will read from his just-published book of verse All Nature is a Sacramental Fire.

Students at the Donahue Academy of Ave Maria have garnered national and state-wide honors recently. Andrew Guernsey was named a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist, scoring in the top one percent of all test takers, and Mary Traver, who graduated in the spring, won a $5,000 scholarship from the Florida Realtors Association. The school also reports its SAT scores are 350 points above the Collier County average.

 Medical-device maker Arthrex announced Friday that it will proceed with its plans to build a 160,000-square-foot manufacturing facility off Oil Well Rd. in Ave Maria. Arthrex also said in a news release that it will embark on a significant expansion initiative in Lee County, purchasing a 240,000-square-foot building to consolidate its warehouse, packaging and distribution operations. The company appears to have abandoned its original plans to expand its North Naples operations, which are in the district of Collier County Commissioner Georgia Hiller, who opposed Collier County incentives for Arthrex. Golf carts driven on Ave Maria's roads and public cart paths will need to display registration stickers within a few weeks, Barron Collier executive Tom Sansbury told the August meeting of the Ave Maria Stewardship Community District Tuesday. Commissioners unanimously approved a zoning map change in Ave Maria Tuesday that relocates 50 acres of commercially-zoned property near Camp Keais Rd. to the southwest corner of Ave Maria along Oil Well Rd. The change makes appropriately-zoned land available for development of a manufacturing facility by medical device maker Arthrex.
