Head football coach Barry Fagan, who assembled Ave Maria University's first intercollegiate football team, has parted company with AMU as part of a reorganization that the university said in a statement concludes an effort to "streamline operations." AMU's first athletics director, Brian Scanlan, also is moving to a new role and Kevin Joyce, currently assistant to AMU President Jim Towey, will take over as both athletics director and head football coach.

The Ave Maria Knights of Columbus invite everyone age 10-14 to compete Saturday, Jan. 7, in the first leg of the KofC's free-throw competition. The top 10 qualifiers -- five boys and five girls -- will advance to the district competition later this month. Competition is at 3:30 p.m. at Donahue Academy. There is no charge, but competitors need to bring proof that they are age 10-14 as of Jan. 1, 2012.

The orchestra will hold auditions Jan. 10 for experienced musicians and also is starting a program to teach violin to beginners. The "Classicial Virtuosi of Ave Maria" instructional program will be taught by performing artist and teacher Kevin Seto.

 The Ave Maria Choraliers performed a Christmas music program at four nursing homes and assisted-living centers in the Naples area. The singers were joined this year by two "Choralettes" from the Donahue Academy for their renditions of Christmas carols and holiday songs.

The Major League Soccer Chicago Fire announced today that the team will return to Ave Maria next January to train. The Fire spent 12 days training in Ave Maria before the start of the 2011 season.

 The Wasenshi Dojo karate training school in Ave Maria recently promoted seven students to new belt levels. Ed Cole, one of Ave Maria's first residents, passed away Monday after a brief illness. He was 84 and is survived by his wife, Marilyn, and his three children and four stepchildren. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at the Ave Maria Oratory, with viewing at 9:30 a.m.

Construction is starting this week on significant improvements to the stretch of Oil Well Rd. between the two segments that are being widened to four and six lanes. The segment between Everglades Blvd. and Oil Well Grade Rd. will remain two lanes, but the lanes will be widened from 10 feet to 12 feet and paved shoulders will be added. The construction will mean the section will be down to one lane at times, so delays can be expected before it is completed in the spring of 2012.

St. Nick is going to be busy around Ave Maria the next few days, with an appearance at the annual Breakfast with St. Nick Sunday, Dec. 4, following his visit to the Celebration of Lights Friday. The Breakfast with St. Nick, sponsored by Ave Maria University student government and the Knights of Columbus, raises money for local parishes and collects toys for the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee. A holiday parade, music, a visit from Santa and even outdoor ice-skating will delight children of all ages at the Ave Maria Celebration of Lights Friday, Dec. 2, from 5-9 pm. And for children above a certain age, a wine bar will be set up outside the Queen Mary Pub serving special holiday treats. The Donahue Academy Shamrocks' playoff run ended Friday with a heartbreaking 68-61 loss to Lakeside Christian of Clearwater in the state six man football semi-finals. Donahue battled back from a 28-7deficit at the end of the first quarter.
The Major League Soccer Chicago Fire will return to train in Ave Maria in January for two weeks, from Jan. 20 to Feb. 3, a representative of Barron Collier confirmed Monday. As the team did last year, they will have pracitice sessions open to the public and some exhibition games at North Park. A full schedule will be made available when it is released.
UPDATE: The Donahue Academy Shamrocks sixman football squad earned a berth in the state semi-finals Friday night, beating F.I.S.H 55-34 at North Park in Ave Maria. Donahue will play Lakeside Christian from Clearwater Friday, Nov. 25, in Safety Harbor, FL, at a NEW TIME: 3 p.m. (changed from 5 p.m.)
