Myra Daniels, a longtime pillar of the arts community in Florida, is donating $3 million to WGCU Public Media and the station's building will be renamed in her honor, the Fort Myers News-Press reports. Mrs. Daniels had planned to spearhead creation of an arts center at Ave Maria before Ave Maria University changed plans for the project.

The Ave Maria Stewardship Community District board has approved holding a referendum June 27 that would let residents determine whether to directly elect one or more members to the board. At their May 3 meeting, supervisors also decided to further study the matter of permitting signs on district property and also approved a draft 2016-2017 budget that keeps assessments on homeowners flat.

The new parish center for the Ave Maria quasi parish will open May 15 with a pancake breakfast after the 10 a.m. Mass, Pastor Fr. Cory Mayer said Thursday. The gym will be owned by Jason Gabauer, who operates the Martial Arts Fitness Academy in the same plaza, and his partner Wilson Ospina.
