One of the most unusual all-night parties in Southwest Florida was the 24-hour "Homerathon" reading of the entire Iliad at Ave Maria University, writes Ave Herald Editor Patricia Sette in her column in the Naples Daily News Collier Citizen. The announcement of Pope Benedict XVI's resignation was met with an outpouring of prayers for the pontiff in Ave Maria, a town with a uniquely Catholic character. "Many of us are still reeling from the news," Ave Maria University director of campus ministry Fr. Robert McTeigue said.

Ave Maria University President Jim Towey said Friday that he was "disappointed" with the announcement earlier in the day by the federal government which the Obama administration called a "compromise" on the issue of mandating organizations to provide health care coverage for birth control services. "The Obama administration blew it again," Mr. Towey saId, with new regulations that "do not appear to settle anything."
