Donahue Football Season Begins Tonight; Coach Scanlon Optimistic

Coach Rich Scanlon looks out at the Donahue Shamrocks preparing for the new eight-man football season and sees a lot he likes about this season for the team that he took to the state championship game last season.
"I'm real excited about what we may be able to do," he said. "We have a lot of veterans returning, including our whole offensive line." Standout quarterback Elias Allan, the league's all-state offensive player of the year, is returning and so is all-state receiver Mark Cheffers, he said. "There's a lot of veteran leadership."
The coach also is enthused about new player Julian Diaz, a versatile player Coach Scanlon says is "quick for a big guy" and who he expects to add depth to both the offense and the defense.
"We're a big ahead of where we were at this point last year," he said.
An added reason for optimism: the dominating Clearwater Academy team that defeated Donahue in the state championships last season, has moved to an 11-man football league and won't be competition this year.
First things first, though, and the team's opener against Eastland Christian in Orlando is challenging. "They're one of the better teams, and we're going to be tested right away. They're very athletic, very quick."
The full Donahue schedule is here. Home games are played on the field at North Park in Ave Maria.
