The new business in Ave Maria, which will have self-pick as well as a farmstand with a large assortment of vegetables, fruits and herbs, is preparing to open to the public in late January. Ave Maria University's popular Dean of Faculty, Michael Dauphinais, has been appointed the school's VP of Academic Affairs, AMU President Jim Towey announced at a fundraising dinner Thursday night. Dr. Dauphinais, the school's dean of faculty for many years, had been serving as the Academic Affairs VP on an interim basis for about a year.

The end of each academic term offers the community the opportunity to hear outstanding musical performances at Ave Maria University Music Department Recitals. This year there are two, one on Saturday afternoon featuring instrumental and vocal performances, and a special Liederabend Sunday featuring students in the Vocal Literature class.

 Several thousands of people came to the annual Celebration of Lights in Ave Maria Friday night for music, food, a parade, games and, of course, a visit from Santa. The outdoor skating rink (above) was a hit in its second year at the festival.

 "Only Santa can get it all done in one day," explained Kurt Brimmer, owner of Brimmer's Custom Decor, as his employees decorated Ave Maria this morning. The company decorates 120 places such as developments, retail areas and golf clubs - and Ave Maria as well - between September and December.

A dinner to raise money for the John Scharffenberger Memorial Scholaship Fund is being at the LaPlaya hotel in Naples on Thursday, Dec. 6. The fund provide scholarships for Ave Maria University students exemplifying the values of the AMU graduate who died in 2011 in a car accident while working for Students for Life.

 UPDATE: There is one more chance to see the Ave Maria University Drama Club's entertaining and enthusiastic performance of Fiddler on the Roof -- Sunday, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m. in the student union ballroom. The event, a local tradition between farmers in Eastern Collier County and businesses in Collier County for almost 50 years, will be held just north of the Arthrex facility Wednesday, Nov. 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tickets for the festivities, including a steak meal, can be purchased online here.
The Ave Maria Stewardship Community District expressed its appreciation Tuesday to Tom Sansbury, a Barron Collier executive whom district lawyer Ken van Assenderp said "played a special role" in getting the formation of the district approved by various levels of government. Mr. Sansbury is retiring at the end of the year.
