 About a dozen Ave Maria University students are studying in Rome this semester and some are sending their thoughts and some pictures to The Ave Herald. Many students are spending a lot of time in St. Peter's Square these days, some there all night to ensure they'll be there when the new pope is announced, writes AMU student Kim Scharfenberger. Thirteen Donahue Academy students chose to forgo the usual diversions of spring break to spend a week on a mission trip serving the poor in Nicaragua. Donahue senior Peter Scheck (right) wrote about what they did, and how the trip was "the experience of a lifetime," for The Ave Herald.

A statue of Our Lady of Fatima, which has been touring the world for more than 65 years, will be at the oratory in Ave Maria March 14 and 15. Specialactivities, including a procession and a talk by the statue's current custodian, are planned for Thursday evening.

Ave Maria University has announced the hiring of Maureen Joyce as the school's new vice president for finance and administration. Mrs. Joyce, who most recently has been comptroller at Simmons College in Boston, will be AMU's third finance chief since Paul Roney resigned at the end of 2011.

 The streets of Ave Maria will be filled with music, chalk and bikes Saturday when a number of events take place simultaneously. Above, Sydney McManus with some of the art that will be for sale to benefit the Casa de Bambini pre-school, which also will be holding a chalk art competition.

Ave Maria University has added undergraduate majors in Education and Accounting, both of which will be offered beginning with the fall semester, the university said in a news release. AMU is launching a nationwide search for a chair of its Education program.

 Ave Maria is "off to the best sales year since the first year we opened," Barron Collier President Blake Gable told a gathering of residents Thursday evening during a wide-ranging discussion in which he also said that the company is looking seriously at proposals for an assisted living center and an apartment development among other future projects.

Blake Gable, president of Barron Collier Cos. who oversees Ave Maria Development, will provide an update on current and future developments in the town at a special two-hour session Thursday, Feb. 28, beginning at 5 p.m. in The Bean of Ave Maria. The event will include a Q&A period, and is open to everyone.
 The Arthrex Manufacturing East facility on Oil Well Rd. in Ave Maria is on schedule to begin preliminary operations in April and the company plans to break ground on a second building in the fall, a company spokesman said.
