Teresa Henderson, a homeschooled student living in the La Piazza neighborhood of Ave Maria, has been named a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist.
She is one of 17 Collier County high students to receive the honor, ranking among 16,000 high school seniors across the nation who scored well on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during their junior year.
To move forward in the competition, semi-finalists need to complete an application, which includes their school performance, community involvement and honors they may have received.
According to the scholarship corporation, "A semi-finalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test."
About 90 percent of the semi-finalists will go on to be named finalists, with this news being announced in February. Scholarship winners will then be announced in the spring and summer of 2017.
