Jackson Labs Officials in Naples Next Week

The CEO of the Jackson Laboratory, along with other top managers, will be in the Naples area next week to discuss the organization's plans to build a biomedical research facility near Ave Maria. State funding for the project continues to work its way through the legislature.

Collier County Commssioners Support Jackson Labs Facility

Commissioners said Monday they could come up witht he $130 million in matching funds that will be needed to bring the facility to a location near Ave Maria.

Research at Jackson Labs Has Helped Millions

If the Jackson Laboratory moves to Collier County, Ave Maria will have a neighbor that was responsible for a number of major medical breakthroughs including the development of immune-suppressant drugs that make organ transplants possible. It works with mice as genetic models, and does no human embryonic stem cell research, the lab's senior VP for research, Mike Hyde, said in an interview with The Ave Herald about the lab's history and plans for its Florida facility. State Senate Earmarks Millions for Research Facility Near AMU

The Florida Senate Ways and Means Committee has approved at least $50 in spending to help a Maine medical research company build a $710-million facility near Ave Maria University. The Jackson Laboratory, an independent research organization based in Maine, has expressed interest in locating a research center in Collier County. If built, it would employ more than 400 people, according to State Senator Garrett Richter.

Mobile Carillon Plays at Ave Maria

Carilloneur Wylie Crawford demonstrated a mobile bell carillon outside the Ave Maria oratory Wednesday afternoon. He was scheduled to play a concerts in the town center Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon as part of celebrations of the Feast of the Annunciation.

Pulte to Invest $20 Million in Ave Maria

 The homebuilder's short-term emphasis will be on developing and marketing the Del Webb community at Ave Maria. Pulte's new investments in Del Webb include a $15-million amenities center and a new model home park - and other changes are in store for the community as a result.

Caution: Bees Swarm This Time of Year

Bees get quite active in the spring and can swarm in large numbers, as seen in the above picture of a swarm of hundreds in a tree outside the Ave Maria oratory recently. These bees departed without incident but there has been at least one instance of a swarm attacking people last week in Phoenix. Click here for that story from the Arizona Republic. 

 
Art Festival to Display Paintings Portraying Gospel of John

A collaboration between a biblical scholar and a self-taught artist has produced a book relating the Gospel of John in 67 color illustrations. Ten of the original paintings from which the book was eventually made will be displayed March 27-28 at the Festival of the Arts in the Ave Maria town center. The book, Trail of Glory (pictured above), will be available at the Ave Maria Inspirations gift shop.

Carillon Performance March 24-25 at Ave Maria University

The music from 48 bronze bells weighing 13 tons will ring out through the town of Ave Maria Wednesday and Thursday in concerts and other performances from one of the world's few traveling carillons. International Children's Art Highlights Ave Maria Arts Festival

Cardinal O'Malley to Preside at AMU Baccalaureate Mass

omalley1Cardinal Sean O'Malley, archibishop of Boston, will celebrate the Baccalaureate Mass May 7 at Ave Maria University, the school has announced. The Mass will be at 5 p.m. in the oratory, with graduation exercises the following day.

Newt Gingrich to Visit Naples for Film Screening

The former Speaker of the House, a recent convert to Catholicism, will be in Naples April 18 with his wife for a screening of "Nine Days that Changed the World" -- a film chronicling the 1979 visit of Pope John Paul II to his native Poland. The event is sponsored by the Ave Maria School of Law.
