Eugene Milhizer Named to Head Ave Maria Law School

emilhizerEugene Milhizer has been named President and Dean of the Ave Maria School of Law, the school announced Friday. Mr. Milhizer had been Acting President and Dean since April, 2008.

Large Ave Maria Contingent Leaves for Washington March for Life

About 150 university and high school students from Ave Maria left Wednesday to attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C. They were supported in part by the local Knights of Columbus chapter and the parish Respect Life Committee which contributed $1,200 for expenses. Above, Lilly Bermudez of the AMU office of Mission and Outreach directs students to their buses.

Update: Local Student Chosen for Olympic Development Soccer Trials

soccer2aLaura Mastandrea (right) has been selected to participate in the next round of the trials. She competed in first round in October and although not initially chosen for the next round, received word recently that she was selected.

$1,000 Prize Offered for Best Poem About The Annunciation

The Festival of the Arts at Ave Maria University will award a $1,000 prize in a competition for the best poem written about The Annunciation. The winner will be announced at the Festival of the Arts, March 28

Aircraft Displays to Highlight 'Wings and Wheels' Event Feb. 6

A variety of aircraft, including a MiG-21 like the one pictured above, will be on display and demonstrated at Immokalee Airport feb. 6 at the Wings and Wheels event sponsored by the Eastern Collier Chamber of Commerce. Vintage cars will also be shown and dragsters will compete in races Feb. 5, 6 and 7.

Jeb Bush to Speak at Ave Maria Law School Commencement

bush1Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush will be the commencement speaker for the Ave Maria School of Law's first graduation ceremonies in Florida, the law school announced. The commencement will be May 15 in the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts.

AMU Women's Basketball Team Wins First Conference Game

The AMU women beat Warner University 77-63 Saturday in their first National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Sun Conference game. The team now is 5-6 overall.

Kellys Win Golf Cart in Band Fundraiser

The Kelly family from Emerson Park (above)  won a golf cart from Golf and Electric Vehicles in a raffle to raise money for the Ave Maria Hometown Band. Money will help the band's activities in 2010.

Historical Novel by AMU Student is Published

 Nathan Sadasivan (above), a junior at Ave Maria University, has written an epic trilogy set during the Crusades. The first volume, Crown of the World -- Knight of the Temple, was published in the summer of 2009.

UPDATE: County Commissioners Approve Oil Well Rd. Project

The long-awaited project to widen Oil Well Rd. got the green light Tuesday from the Collier County Board of Commissioners. Construction will likely start by February.

Cardinal Newman Society: AMU Donor Tom Golisano Pro-Life

The publisher of The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College says it is "relieved and grateful" that Mr. Golisano has publicly stated his opposition to legalized abortion in a letter to Ave Maria University. Mr. Golisano has donated $4 million to AMU for construction of an athletic building that will be named in his honor.

Bishop Serafim from Fatima Visits Ave Maria This Week

Bishop Serafim de Sousa Ferreira e Silva, who led the diocese in which Fatima is located from 1993-2006, will be spending most of the week in Ave Maria. He will celebrate Mass daily Monday-Thursday and also address the Naples Founders Club Tuesday night.
