AMU Welcomes Its Largest Incoming Class

Ave Maria fell back to the familiar rhythm of the academic year Monday as about 1,100 students – about 10 percent more than last year – returned to campus for the start of classes. The incoming freshman class was "hovering at 400," President Jim Towey said in a posting on the AMU website, making it the largest freshman class in the school's history.

AMU also welcomed its first group of students for its newly-created nursing department.

Among the new faces of the students are several new faculty as well, including three new "visiting" full-time professors for the music department which is attempting to rebuild after the firing and departures of most of the department's faculty in June. (See separate previous Ave Herald story here.)

And in other shuffling of resources, Mr. Towey said in a blog post that economics professor Gabriel Martinez now is the interim vice president of academic affairs. That job had been held on an interim basis by politics professor Seana Sugrue after the former VP, Michael Dauphinais, resigned at the end of the last academic year to return to teaching. At the time, Mr. Towey said a search would be started to find a permanent replacement with the hope that the person would start in January, 2016.
