 A new volume showcases the work of nine poets who submitted entries in a national contest for poems about The Annunciation. The poems in The Annunciation in Poetry and Sculpture are set against the backdrop of color photographs of the creation of the marble sculpture of The Annunciation carved for the façade of the Ave Maria oratory.

Jim Towey, the next president and CEO of Ave Maria University, told the National Catholic Register his visit to the town and campus in January was the key factor in his decision process. "What really swung me was the visit to the campus in January to speak there. I was so surprised. It was something I had never seen before." He also said that Cardinal Wuerl of Washington " twisted my arm a little bit when I was discerning to take the job. That, to me, is a good sign that so much of America’s Church leadership is excited about Ave Maria."

Ave Maria University announced Thursday that Jim Towey, a lawyer with experience in academia, government and Catholic missionary work, will be the university's president and CEO effective July 1. Current President Nick Healy will remain involved as President Emeritus and founder Tom Monaghan will step back from day-to-day management, the university announced.  The MLS Chicago Fire plan two training sessions a day that will be open to the public on most of the days they are training in Ave Maria from Feb. 14-Feb. 25 They also will play an exhibition game against Florida Gulf Coast University Feb. 17.

 U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will visit Ave Maria briefly Friday afternoon and will hold a question-and-answer session in the Ave Maria University ballroom for students and faculty of AMU and the Ave Maria School of Law. Mr. Justice Thomas is in the area for a speaking engagement Friday morning in Naples, where he'll address a meeting of Legatus, an association of Catholic business leaders. The AMU session is closed to the public because of space limitations.
The First Sunshine State Steak Cook-Off capped a day that drew people to Ave Maria for the Family Fun Fest, various sports events and the opening of the new Del Webb model center. The steak cook-off was won by a team from the AMU faculty, calling themselves Bovus Dei, pictured above.

 The Ave Maria University Film Society's next event is a screening and discussion Thursday night of the 1988 mystery-thriller The Vanishing. The film, about a man’s obsessive search for his girlfriend after her mysterious disappearance during their vacation, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in the lecture hall of the academic building, with a talk and discussion afterward at The Bean led by philosophy professor Michael Pakaluk. All are welcome and there is no admission charge. An interview with Dr. Pakaluk about the film by literature professor Mark McCullough is on the film society's blog here.
 Broadcaster and former Miami Dolphins linebacker Kim Bokamper (right) will be one of the judges at the Sunshine State Steak Cook Off, which will cap a day of events in Ave Maria that include the annual Family Fun Festival benefiting Donahue Academy, a little league baseball tournament at North Park, and the official opening of the new model center at Del Webb.

 With a blowout 86-47 win over Clearwater Christian Tuesday night, the Lady Gyrenes improved their overall record to 14-5. The women are tied for first place in the NAIA Sun Conference and are ranked first in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, an organization of smaller colleges and universities The team's next game is a Sun Conference contest at home Friday at 6 p.m. against Southeastern.
