Two of three priests ordained Saturday by Bishop Frank Dewane – Fr. Joseph Gates and Fr. Eric Scanlan -- have ties to the Ave Maria community.
Fr. Scanlan is the son of Brian and Veronique Scanlan of Hampton Village. He is the oldest of 11 children and has most recently been studying in Rome, where he will return to complete his final year of studies for his Master's degree. Right, Fr. Fr. Scanlan will be the principal celebrant at the 10 a.m. Mass in the Ave Maria oratory Sunday, July 7.
Fr. Gates received a Masters of Divinity from St. Vincent de Paul Seminary in Boynton Beach, FL. The program included one year year of pastoral experience which he spent at Epihany Cathedral. During the summers, Joseph interned as spent time in the Dominican Republic in an intensive Spanish program, a chaplain in an ecumenical setting in a hospital environment in Washington, D.C., served in Campus Ministry at Florida International University, pastorally at St. Andrews in Cape Coral and as Deacon locally on weekends at the parishes.
His mother, Kim, and his seven younger siblings were among the first residents of Ave Maria and live in Emerson Park. Pictured at left, Fr. Gates as a seminarian, with his mother. Right, the Gates family at his ordination to the diaconate last year:
