Dominican Sisters to Leave Donahue Academy

An order of nuns who have taught at the Donahue Academy and have been part of the Ave Maria community since 2007 will be leaving town at the end of the current school year, Donahue Board Chairman Michael Schwartz announced Friday.

Mother Assumpta Long, prioress general of the rapidly growing Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, informed Mr. Schwartz in a letter earlier in the week that the sisters would be leaving at the end of the current school year. The order has educational missions in more than a dozen other locations in the United States.

"This news is disappointing as we had hoped they would continue to teach our students," Mr. Schwatz said in a letter to Donahue families.

Mr. Schwartz did not give a reason why the nuns are leaving, nor did Mother Assumpta, in her letter to him. "We will never forget the countless students, parents and faculty of the academy who touched the lives of the sisters who taught there," she said.

Three nuns started the 2016-2017 school year as teachers at Donahue but one left in the middle of the spring term for undisclosed reasons. Another sister has been teaching at Ave Maria University.
