New Dollar Store Adds Variety to Ave Maria

dollarlogoLiving in Ave Maria got a lot more convenient with the recent opening of the Dollar Corner store next to Publix.

The store is locally owned and managed by Armando and Angelica San Martin, who moved from their native Honduras in March and now live in Maple Ridge in Ave Maria.

The San Martins were drawn to Ave Maria, as many were, by Ave Maria University.

"We wanted a good Catholic college for our daughter," Mr. San Martin explained. "When we found Ave Maria University, that was it." On that same trip in 2013, the San Martins said they also saw an opportunity to start a business in a growing town.

dollar-350"We looked at several types of businesses and franchises, but thought a dollar store would be important to the community," Mr. San Martin said.

The couple owned a pharmacy in their home town of Comayagua, about 50 miles northwest of the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa, where Mrs. San Martin also worked as a pharmacist.

Their oldest of three chidren, Maria Angelica, is a freshman at AMU and her brother and sister attend the Donahue Academy. (pictured inside the store, l-r, Angelica and Armando with their daughter Maria Angelica)

Dollar Corner sells a wide range of merchandise – housewares, hardware, party goods, office and school supplies, beauty products, craft items, greeting cards and cleaning supplies are among thousands of items neatly arranged in the store's 2,400 square feet. Almost all items cost exactly one dollar, the few exceptions being name-brand products on which the price is clearly marked.

"I came in here to look around thinking I didn't need anything, and I'm leaving with a large armful of stuff," said one recent customer.

Dollar Corner is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
