AMU's Tim McDonnell Conducts Three Naples Philharmonic Performances
AMU Music Department Chair Tim McDonnell is making his debut conducting the Naples Philharmonic this week in three performances of Haydn's The Creation being being given in Bonita Springs, Marco Island and Naples.
For the performances, part of the Naples Philharmonic's Around Town series, the 40 voices of the AMU Oratory Singers are joining the Naples Philharmonic Choir.
The performances are Thursday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Bonita Springs, Friday March 27 at 8 p.m. at Wesley United Church on Marco Island and Sunday, March 29, at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Naples. Tickets are available at the Artis Naples website here.
The Creation is based on Milton's Paradise Lost. This performance was especially adapted into English by Dr. McDonnell who said he wanted to make it more lyrical.
"Most English adaptations of The Creation are straight translations from the German," he explained. "I went to Milton's original source material to make it more singable and less awkward. The Oratory Singers will rejoin the Naples Philharmonic Choir in April for a performance of César Franck's Psyché under its new director Andrey Boreyko.
