The town center of Ave Maria will again be ringed with barbecue grills Saturday, Jan. 24, for the fifth annual Sunshine State Steak Cook Off.
About 20 grill teams will be vying for the title of best steak in Florida at the event, which also includes family fun activities and the 5k "Ribeye Run."
The event kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with the traditional "Parade of Grills," where teams not only get to their grilling stations but also start making a play for the event's "Holy Smokes" trophy, awarded to the team with the best showmanship.
Family fun activities will be going all day. A $10 wristband covers unlimited use of a variety of attractions and there are free activities as well including the Collier County Sheriff's Office climbing wall and a demonstration by the CCSO bomb squad. The 5k "Ribeye Run" is at 2 p.m. and registration information for runners is available by clicking here.
Local musicians Roman Samuels and Martin Doman will be performing throughout the afternoon and the steaks will be served at 5 p.m. with prizes awarded around 6:30 p.m.
A steak dinner that includes a 16-ounce ribeye steak, corn, salad and a drink costs
$20 in advance or $25 the day of the event. Tickets can be ordered by clicking here or purchased at the Donahue Academy or the Ave Maria Development office in the town center. Proceeds from the event support scholarships at the Donahue Academy.
Later that evening the Seminole Casino in Immokalee is putting on a large fireworks display, the Carnival in the Sky, open to everyone, beginning at 9 p.m. at the casino grounds, about five miles north of Ave Maria.
