Ave Maria may be in the running as a location for a seventh VA nursing home in Florida.
UPDATE: Collier County commissioners voted Tuesday to move forward with an application to have the Florida Veterans Affairs department select an Ave Maria site for a new VA nursing home in the state. Ave Maria Development has offered to donate 20 acres of land for the facility, and Collier County commissioners voted to accept that offer and to appropriate $500,000 for the project.
The Florida VA has asked 10 Florida regions to consider submitting applications, with a deadline of May 14.
Collier County Commissioner Tom Henning, who currently is chair of the board, told the Naples Daily News that he thinks Ave Maria "is a perfect site" for the project.
Two Ave Maria locations are being proposed. One, on the north side of Pope John Paul II Blvd just west of Camp Keais Rd. and the other off Oil Well Rd. near the Arthrex manufacturing plant. Barron Collier is said to favor the Oil Well Rd. location although only the location on Pope John Paul II Blvd is already zoned for a nursing home. The Oil Well Rd. location would have appropriate zoning if changes currently in the pipeline are approved later this year.
Documents prepared for the county commissioners say that the facility would have 120 beds, employ 190 people and have an annual budget of $7 million.
The summary of the proposal being submitted to county commissioners can be viewed as a PDF document on the county website here.
