Donahue Shamrocks Dominant in Football Opener

The Donahue Academy Shamrocks racked up 36 unanswered points in the first 12 minutes Saturday night to defeat Community Christian in Port Charlotte in the opening game of the 7-man football season.

Lightning storms developed just before the end of the first quarter and both coaches agreed to end the game with the Shamrocks up 36-0.

Matt Houde returned the opening kick-off for a touchdown and added a receiving TD. Joe Deliso returned a punt for a TD and added 3 extra points. Lane Lawe and John Hurley added one rushing TD each.

" It was a nice way to begin the season," said Coach Rich Scanlon. "Community is a second year start-up program and will have a difficult season. Next, we'll face a much improved and very fast Nicea team next week in the home opener." That game is at 7 p.m. at North Park in Ave Maria.

Looking further ahead, Coach Scanlon is excited about the 2013 season.

"We are led this year by 14 seniors, " he said.

" Matt Houde, Lane Lawe and Luke Scheck are 3 strong senior captains. John Longely and John Hurley will help lead the team at quarterback. Cale Schneider, Daniel Scanlan and Dominic Allan will be 2-way starters. Our depth is improved. Returning defensive starters Marco Vega, Luke Scheck, Albert Matthews and Dan Scanlan give us an opportunity to improve on last year's performance. It is always difficult to know how good you are until you play a few games. I like the energy and enthusiasm."
