There will be seminars and lectures open to the public later this year at Ave Maria that will examine moral and other issues raised by the proximity of the proposed Jackson Labs research park, AMU President Nick Healy said Thursday night in his welcoming address to new students.

Collier County residents should not expect a referendum on the Jackson Lab project despite the victory in the Tuesday District 2 primary election by Georgia Hiller, who is in favor of one, the Naples Daily News reports. Three other members of the five-member board rejected a referendum at the commissioners' last meeting. Click for story from Naples Daily News
Fred Coyle, a leader in the effort to bring a Jackson Lab facility to the area, won a narrow re-election victory Tuesday night over challenger Lavigne Kirkpatrick in the Republican primary for the District 4 seat. Mr. Coyle received about 54 percent of the vote and is commissioner-elect as there is no challenger in the general election. In the election for the District 2 open seat, Georgia Hiller, who has said there should be a referendum on the proposed $130-million county subsidy for Jackson Labs, won handily and faces independent Chuck Roth in the general election. The California-based company Athleticode, which uses genetic tests to identify and reduce the risk of athletic injuries, says it will partner with the Jackson Laboratory at the proposed research park near Ave Maria.  Statues of the Blessed Mother and the Infant Jesus of Prague were installed Tuesday in niches to the left (Mary) and right (Infant of Prague) of the oratory doors. The statues join those of the 12 apostles over the doors.

 The Oprah Winfrey Show that featured the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist -- some of whom teach in Ave Maria -- will be shown again next week. In Ave Maria, the program will be broadcast Monday, Aug. 16, at 4 p.m. on Channel 5 and Tuesday, Aug. 17, at 9 a.m. on Channel 6.

Ave Maria University received the highest possible score for the fiscal year that ended in June, 2009, in the U.S. Department of Education's assessment of the financial stability of higher educational institutions while the Ave Maria School of Law has among the lowest scores.

Florida State legislators are analyzing the stimulus bill passed Tuesday by the U.S. Congress to determine its effect on numerous state budget items, including the $50 million earmarked for the Jackson Lab genetics research facility near Ave Maria.

 The Ave Maria Stewardship Community District board of supervisors approved the budget for the next fiscal year at a meeting Tuesday which moved along quickly and smoothly under new rules and procedures.  American Discount Pharmacy (above), plans to open Aug. 18 in Immokalee, offering rock-bottom prices on hundreds of prescription drugs. The pharmacy will have a drop box for prescriptions in the Ave Maria Dentistry offices, and representatives will be at The Bean Aug. 22 to meet residents.

The Collier County Sheriff's Department is investigating an attempted burglary of the ATM at the Publix supermarket in Ave Maria. No cash was taken, although a window at the Publix was broken.
