Ave Maria University graduated its first class whose members attended all four years at the permanent campus in Florida Saturday, at a ceremony that was the last graduation presided over by retiring AMU president Nick Healy. Above, graduates toss their caps in front of the oratory after the Baccalaureate Mass. Cardinal Levada is at center with Bishop Frank Dewane and pastor Fr. Robert Tatman.
The graduates were urged by Cardinal William Levada at the day's opening Baccalaureate Mass to retain and deepen the religious life they have developed experiencing "the vibrant Catholic identity of Ave Maria University."
He told the class of 2011 that as they leave "this oasis of Catholicity and go into the wider world," they will encounter a different environment than they have had for their four years on campus. "If you don't know yet that a lot of people dislike the Catholic Church, you will know very soon," he said. Right, Cardinal Levada delivering his homily.
Inspiration for their future experiences can be found in the biblical book the Acts of the Apostles, Cardinal Levada said. "The Acts of the Apostles is but the first chapter of how the mission of Christ began to unfold. But tomorrow's chapters are ours to write -- yours and mine."
"Your education at Ave Maria has equipped you well to follow the exortation of St. Peter -- always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope," said the cardinal, who, as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is the highest-ranking American cleric at the Vatican. Fr. Robert McTeigue, who delivered an address on behalf of the faculty at the afternoon's commencement ceremony, echoed some of Cardinal Levada's comments telling the graduates, "the Church and the World need you."
Similarly, the class salutatorian, Jamille Seaberg, urged her classmates, "Do not leave the ideas of Ave Maria behind."
"it is our vocation to sanctify society," Miss Seaberg said.
AMU presented honorary degrees to the commencement speaker, Carl Anderson, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, and to Catholic philanthropist Patricia Lynch.
There were 130 Bachelor of Arts degrees conferred, 24 Masters degress and one Ph.D. Left, Fr. Garrity leading the commencement closing prayer. To his right are AMU Chancellor Tom Monaghan, President Nick Healy and Cardinal Levada.
The commencement was the last overseen by retiring AMU President Nick Healy, who said the experience of guiding the university to this point in its history is "a treasured memory I will carry with me."
