The double-elimination competition began last week. Donahue lost its first match against Oakridge Middle School but came back to win matches against Corkscrew Middle School and Cypress Palm Middle School to advance to the next round. Donahue then defeated Oakridge and Royal Palm to win the title.
Donahue's Scholar Bowl team has 18 members in grades 6-8, coached by Denise Chmielowski and Gretel Smith. Eight team members were selected to represent the school in the regional competition: Clare Beane and Tommy Smith, 8th-grade team captians; Thomas Dauphinais, Robert Ferraiuolo, Maria Fox, C.J. Smith and Robert Voorhees from 7th grade; and Louis Spier from 6th grade.
The team practiced weekly from September and competed in four practice matches with other Collier County schools during the year -- all of which Donahue won. Questions are a mix of math, science, language arts, social studies, current events, and fine arts.
Donahue Acedemy of Ave Maria grabbed the North Division championship by defeating Royal Palm Academy 184-132, Gulfview has now won three straight titles with their victory over East Naples Middle School 168-108 in the South Division final, and North Naples claimed the Central Division crown with a 158-122 win over Community School.
The Middle School Scholar Bowl Tournament features student teams from each participating school competing against each other in the areas of math, science, language arts, social studies, current events, and fine arts.
