The question of the limits of constitutional government will be the topic of the Ave Maria University spring convocation keynote address Friday delivered by noted political scientist Hadley Arkes.
Professor Arkes, a Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C., will speak on Where are the Limits in a Limited Government?.
Dr. Arkes is leading expert on American political philosophy and public policy. He was largely responsible for authoring the Born Alive Infants' Protection Act of 2002 and the account of his experience in moving the bill through Congress is contained as an epilogue to his book, Natural Rights & the Right to Choose
For this talk, Professor Arkes draws upon the recent surge of interest in finding again the limits of our constitutional government and argues that there are indeed limits, but they are not to be found in a list of "delegated powers". Rather, they are moral limits, guided by a body of principles, some actually registered in the Constitution, and some outside the text.
The Convocation is Jan. 14 at 5 p.m. in the Ave Maria student union ballroom. Seating is available for students, faculty and a limited number of guests.
