Bishop Serafim, the bishop emeritus of the diocese in which Fatima is located, has fond memories of his visit in December to Ave Maria. His memories are fondest, he recently told Ave Maria residents Jean and Jim Dudek, of "the spirit of the youth of Ave Maria."
Partly in remembrance of his visit to Ave Maria, Bishop Serafimwith has made a gift to Fr. Robert Tatman, pastor of the Ave Maria Oratory quasi parish, of the red vestments he wore while concelebrating Mass with Pope Benedict XVI during the Holy Father's recent trip to Portugal. The Masses Pope Benedict celebrated in Lisbon, Fatima and Oporto were concelebrated with all the Portuguese bishops, and all wore red vestments at the Mass in Oporto.
Mr. and Mrs. Dudek were in Portugal for the papal visit and brought back to Ave Maria the red vestments which Bishop Serafim asked be presented to Fr. Tatman.
They were first worn in Ave Maria by Fr. Piotr Paciorek (below left) when he celebrated Mass on the Feast of Pentacost.
Bishop Serafim also asked that they be worn by priests celebrating Mass at the Donahue Academy. While on their trip to Fatime, Mr. and Mrs. Dudek had brought petitions from the Donahue Academy which were included in one of the Holy Father's Masses in Fatima.
Mr. and Mrs. Dudek said that Bishop Serafim told them the community of Ave Maria made a lasting impression on him, and he hopes to return at some point in the future.
