AMU Student Wins Nature Photography Contest

An Ave Maria University student, a town resident and a professor took top honors in the AMU Biology Department's nature photography contest, "Behold the Work of His Hands."

"We were highly impressed by the quality of the photographs that were submitted," said Lab Coordinator Rachel Smolinski, who organized the contest. "We hope to make it an annual event."

Submissions were judged by an independent panel of photographers from Naples.

First place was awarded to AMU junior Julia Higgs for Sunset on the Water (right), taken at Lake Placid, FL.

Miss Smolinski said the contest received several high-quality submissions from children and the judges decided to recognize them with two awards in a children's division.

First place in the division was awarded to Colleen Kilpatrick, 12, for Thorny Cactus (below left). Second place in the division went to Joseph Peliska, 15, for Bird in Pine (below right).
