Ave Maria attorney Robb Klucik has become the first declared candidate for the April 25 election in which town residents, for the first time, will directly elect one of the seats on the Ave Maria Stewardship Community District board.
Mr. Klucik filed paperwork to run well in advance of the qualifying period which runs from March 24-31.
Mr. Klucik was responsible for starting the process about a year ago to convert one of the seats on the five-member board to one that is chosen by residents in a popular-vote election. Until now, all members of the board were chosen in a "landowners' election" in which property owners were allocated votes based on the amount of property owned in the district. The other four seats on the board will continue to be chosen in that manner until certain thresholds are reached for the amount of developed area in the town.
The seat that will be up for election is occupied temporarily by town resident Jim Carletta, who was appointed last fall.
The requirements for candidacy are that a person needs to be at least 18 years old and a resident of both the district and the state of Florida. Paperwork to run, which must be submitted by the end of the qualifying period March 31, is available at the offices of the Ave Maria Master Association.
Mr. Klucik, one of Ave Maria's first residents, said in a statement that he wants to bring "new and fresh ideas" to the board. He also said he will push to have a live video feed of district board meetings.
The AMSCD is a special-purpose board responsible for infrastructure in Ave Maria such as major roads, stormwater drainage, large retention ponds and lakes and irrigation water supply. The founding documents of the town provide a mechanism for residents to elect at least some members of the board, although based on maps provided by developers it is not clear when, if ever, residents will ever choose a majority of the members of the board.
