The Collier County Sheriff's Office is investigating a single-vehicle accident early Sunday morning on Ave Maria Blvd. in which the driver was so seriously injured he was med-flighted to Lee Memorial Hospital.
Police have not released the name of the 21-year-old driver because the incident is still under active investigation. The police report says alcohol was involved in the incident and that Lee Memorial reported the driver had a blood alcohol level of 0.166, more than twice the legal limit.
The sheriff's deputy who responded to the call at 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning reported that the car, a 2007 Honda, was seriously damaged and there was damage to the median on Ave Maria Blvd. but the driver was not at the scene. A witness who happened upon the accident scene told police the driver walked toward the nearby entrance to Del Webb. The police report says the deputy obtained the address of a relative of the driver in Del Webb from Ave Maria University Security and the driver was found in the home hiding in a closet. His injuries were serious enough that he was med-flighted to Lee Memorial.
Police said Monday afternoon that they did not have up-to-date information on the driver's condition.
