Kevin Joyce, a high-profile and versatile member of the Ave Maria University administration, has resigned as the school's Vice President of Institutional Advancement, AMU President Jim Towey said in an email to staff and faculty.

joycea-250Mr. Joyce has held a number of positions at AMU since the summer of 2010 when he resigned a seat in the Illinois legislature to move his family to Ave Maria and take a job in the Development department. He then served as a special assistant to the president, head football coach and athletic director before assuming the leadership of Institutional Advancement about three years ago.

In his letter of resignation, which was distributed to AMU staff, Mr. Joyce said his last day would be Feb. 19, after the school's annual fundraising dinner and its winter meeting of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Towey said the date gives him time to "identify and appoint" a successor to Mr. Joyce.

He will be taking a job described as a "regional position" with Catholic Extension, a 110-year-old charity that helps Catholic parishes and dioceses in disadvantaged areas. The organization is based in Chicago and headed by a long-time friend of Mr. Joyce, Fr. Jack Wall. Mr. Joyce said in his resignation letter that he has known Fr. Wall since childhood and that the priest officiated at his marriage to his wife, Krista.

Mr. Joyce will be remaining in Ave Maria where he and his family have developed a number of other business interests including rental real estate and the Pub and Bean of Ave Maria, of which his wife is a co-owner. A call seeking further comment from Mr. Joyce was not returned.
