Fifty years after the publication of the Vatican II document Dignitatis Humanae, its subject -- religious liberty -- is more timely than ever.
Ave Maria University is holding an all-day conference on the subject Dec. 9 to which the public is invited.
The conference will feature a number of AMU professors as well as internationally-known scholars Thomas Pink from King's College in London and David L. Schindler of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute.
"The recent threats to religious liberty have given the 50th anniversary of Dignitatis Humanae a renewed importance and urgency," said conference organizer Michael Breidenbach, an assistant professor of history at AMU. "These scholars represent an array of academic disciplines -- including theology, philosophy, history, and political science -- to aid in our understanding of religious liberty and church-state relations. I have organized the conference to reflect, as much as possible, the diverse interpretations of these issues, and I look forward to a vigorous and collegial exchange of ideas.
