Persistence paid off Saturday for three teams of Ave Maria residents who have been competing in the Sunshine State Steak Cookoff for many years.
Ave Maria teams took all the top three places in the fifth annual competition that raises money for scholarships to the Rhodora Donahue Academy.
First place was awarded to the team calling itself Big Carbon Footprint. In picture right, Michael Timmis, with the team and some of their family members, holds their trophy. Other members of the team were Tim Moore, Tanner Cole, Beau Braden, Martin Doman and Hugo Terrero.
The local chapter of the Knights of Columbus team -- Knights on Fire -- was first runner up. (Pictured below are team members Tim Brannon, Jeff Ball, Ron Shapiro, Carlos Figueroa and Don Imbus.)
Finishing third was the High Steaks team led by Chris Buccherri (below left).
The Holy Smokes trophy, awarded for thebest showmanship, went to a team from the Collier County Sheriff's Office, competing for the first time. They deputies put on quite a show in the parade of grills opening the competition, with a cannon spewing smoke mounted on the back of a pick-up truck. (below right)
Although attendance at the Family Fun Fest during the day was dampened by some morning showers, skies cleared and organizers said that they served about 1,400 steaks to people who came from throughout southwest Florida.
