If the Jackson Laboratory moves to Collier County, Ave Maria will have a neighbor that was responsible for a number of major medical breakthroughs including the development of immune-suppressant drugs that make organ transplants possible. It works with mice as genetic models, and does no human embryonic stem cell research, the lab's senior VP for research, Mike Hyde, said in an interview with The Ave Herald about the lab's history and plans for its Florida facility. The Florida Senate Ways and Means Committee has approved at least $50 in spending to help a Maine medical research company build a $710-million facility near Ave Maria University. The Jackson Laboratory, an independent research organization based in Maine, has expressed interest in locating a research center in Collier County. Bees get quite active in the spring and can swarm in large numbers, as seen in the above picture of a swarm of hundreds in a tree outside the Ave Maria oratory recently. A collaboration between a biblical scholar and a self-taught artist has produced a book relating the Gospel of John in 67 color illustrations. Ten of the original paintings from which the book was eventually made will be displayed March 27-28 at the Festival of the Arts in the Ave Maria town center. The book, Trail of Glory (pictured above), will be available at the Ave Maria Inspirations gift shop.

Cardinal Sean O'Malley, archibishop of Boston, will celebrate the Baccalaureate Mass May 7 at Ave Maria University, the school has announced. The Mass will be at 5 p.m. in the oratory, with graduation exercises the following day.

The Ave Maria University music department is putting on an innovative evening that combines Shakespeare and opera in a way few have probably heard either performed. Shakespeare in Tune will be presented March 27 as part of a dinner-theater fundraiser for the university.
