fbcoach-200Ave Maria University has announced the hiring of a new head football coach, the school's fourth since the Gyrenes first took to the gridiron five and a-half years ago.

The job now falls to Joe Patterson, who was the head football coach at St. John's College High School in Washington, D.C. for 12 years, AMU said in a news release.

AMU Athletic Director Kim King said he "brings with him both a passion for football and excitement for advancing the Catholic mission of the university. He is the perfect fit for what we are trying to do here."

Patterson was fired by St. John's in December. His replacement at St. John's was, as reported by the Syracuse Post-Standard, hired before for last season as an assistant coach at the urging of a major donor to St. John's.

Patterson replaces Marty Quinn, who resigned "for personal reasons," according to the news release. He coached for the Gyrenes the last four seasons, three of them as head coach. In his first year as head coach, AMU had its only winning record, going 7-2 for the season, but was 5-6 the next year and 4-7 last season.
