df2-300A well-prepared and more experienced Donahue Academy football team will take the field Friday night, Aug. 28, for the opening game of the season against Geneva Classical from Lakeland.

"I'm excited about the coming season," said Donahue Shamrocks Coach Rich Scanlon. "We had a really young team last year, but all except one are coming back this season so we have much more experience." (right, Coach Scanlon with the team at a game in 2014)

Despite the lack of experience, the Shamrocks still managed a 6-4 record and made it to the first round of the playoffs under Coach Scanlon, who has never had a losing season since taking over the coaching duties in 2010.

The team should be in better shape this year as well with the recent expansion of the weight room and a more intensive conditioning program.

"We're stronger at each position," Coach Scanlon said.

He is looking for continuing improvement at quarterback from junior Elias Allan as well as sophomore Mark Cheffers. "Elias is big, with a strong arm, and has great potential."

And there's also great expectation for Elias's brother Dominic, an all-state linebacker last year who plays on both sides of the ball. "He has potential to be a real force not only on defense but also as a receiver and running back. He's very versatile, can do a number of different things, and is a big-play guy. When we need a big play we usually go to him.

The first game is at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28 at North Park in Ave Maria.
