Donahue Girls' Stellar Basketball Season Ends with Loss in Sarasota

rjdagirls-400The Donahue Academy girls basketball team's playoff run ended Tuesday night in Sarasota with a 59-20 loss to Sarasota Christian Academy in the semi-finals of the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 2A regional playoffs.

"The game tonight was not what we had hoped for, but it does not take away from the excellent year we had and the promise of more to come in the future," said Head Coach Timo Donohue. "This group was the perfect one to begin a program with here at the Donahue Academy and I am very proud of what they accomplished in their first year of FHSAA basketball."

This is the first year that any Donahue teams are eligible for league play in the FHSAA, which governs sports for public and private high schools in the state. To get to the regional playoffs, the Donahue girls had to beat teams from larger schools with more established sports programs.

The Donahue girls have played strong defense all year, but Tuesday night ran into an even stronger one.

"Sarasota Christians defensive pressure resulted in turnovers," Coach Donohue said. "We never got into an offensive rhythm and our turnovers led to many layups for Sarasota Christian. They also blocked close to ten shot attempts by our team."

High scorer for Donahue was Emilee Fournier with nine, followed by Ann Guernsey and Rhodora Moore who each had four points. Caitlyn Schneider had two points and Claire Buzzanca had  one.
