The Ave Maria University Gyrenes are no longer winless on the football field.
AMU shutout a team from fledgling Cape Coast Sports Academy 41-0 Saturday in an exhibition game at Palmetto Ridge High School. Cape Coast is a sports-focused institution that prepares athletes for college athletics.
"I could not be more proud of our players and assistant coaches as well as the the university community that came out to support the team," said new AMU Head Coach Kevin Joyce.
The Gyrenes begin their NAIA season Sept. 15 at Birmingham Southern College. They play their first home game Sept. 22 at noon against Southern Virginia University.
At North Park in Ave Maria Saturday night, the Donahue Academy Shamrocks were handed their first loss of the 7-man football season, falling 48-33 to Canterbury, last year's state champions.
"Canterbury had a lot of speed and they were well coached," said Coach Rich Scanlon.
Nathan Gay led the Shamrocks offense with four rushing touchdowns and Lane Lawe added another. John Longely was 13/21 for 191 yards and one interception and John Hurley was 9/15 for 106 yards. Joe Chmielowski had 12 tackles and 3 sacks to lead the defense.
