AMU Student Dies in Single-Car Accident

burroughs-300The Ave Maria University community is mourning the loss of a popular 22-year-old student, Clayton Burroughs, who died in a car accident Friday morning on Camp Keais Rd. north of the town of Ave Maria.

UPDATE: Funeral services will be held at the Marco Presbyterian Church at 875 West Elkcam Circle, Marco Island, Monday at 5 p.m.

"He was really lively, really friendly, really honest -- such a great guy," said AMU senior Lorna Pearce, remembering the young man.

Mr. Burroughs, from Marco Island, was going into his junior year at AMU and was working for the summer for the university's physical plant department. He was an original member of the Ave Maria University football squad, starting as a redshirted freshman in the 2009-2010 academic year before the team actually began playing scheduled games. He was not intending to play football this year, Football Coach Kevin Joyce said.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that Mr. Burroughs was driving south on Camp Keais Rd. shortly after 6 a.m. this morning when he lost control of his car, which went off the road into a stand of trees before overturning. There were no apparent factors such as weather or an animal that contributed to the crash, police said, adding that the young man was not wearing a seatbelt.

AMU President Jim Towey said the death of Mr. Burroughs, who was majoring in business, was a huge shock to the AMU community. Prayers were offered for the young man and his family at a mass in the oratory at noon, and Mr. Towey said a memorial mass will be scheduled after the start of the fall term.
