\nFid el Castro promised the Cuban people he was not a Communist when he took ov er Cuba ...but some of the Cubans knew better!
\nBetween 1960 and 1962\, over 14\,000 children were sent out of Cuba alone by despe rate parents who feared for their children's future under Castro. Victor d iscusses the events and key figures surrounding the exodus\, including the roles of the Catholic church and the State Department\, and the extent of the CIA's involvement.
\nA stirring account of the cover t effort to smuggle Cuban children into the United States in the aftermath of Fidel Castro's rise to power\, Fleeing Castro brings to light the huma nitarian program designed to care for the children once they arrived and t he hardship and suffering endured by the families who took part in Operati on Pedro Pan.
\nFrom late 1960 until the October 1962 mis sile crisis\, 14\,048 unaccompanied Cuban children left their homeland\, t he small island suddenly at the center of the Cold War struggle. Their par ents\, unable to obtain visas to leave Cuba\, believed a short separation would be preferable to subjecting their offspring to Castro's totalitarian Marxist state. For the children\, the exodus began a prolonged and tragic ordeal--some didn't see their parents again for years\; a few never did.< /span>
\nUntil now\, this chapter of the Cuban Revolution has be en relatively obscure. Initially the result of an effort by James Baker\, headmaster of an American school in Cuba who worked closely with the anti- Castro underground\, Pedro Pan quickly came to involve the Catholic Church in Miami and\, in particular\, Father Bryan Walsh\, who established the C uban Children's Program\, the nationwide organization that cared for those children without relatives or friends in the United States--almost half o f them. The latter program\, in effect until 1981\, was the first to allot federal money to private agencies for child care\, an action with far-rea ching repercussions for U.S. social policy.
\nVictor Andr es Triay traces this story from its political and social origins in Cuba\, setting it in the context of the Cold War and describing the roles of the organizations involved in Cuba and in the United States. Making use of ex tensive interviews with Baker\, Walsh\, and influential underground figure s\, as well as personal letters that document the fears and dreams of both the parents and the children\, Triay presents this history of Pedro Pan-- the largest child refugee movement ever in the Western Hemisphere--with th e drama of an international thriller and the pathos of a heartbreaking fam ily drama.

e dignity of every woman. She volunteers her time as Medical Consultant to
Community Pregnancy Clinics and as Natural Family Planning Trainer for th
e Diocese of Venice. She is a frequent lecturer on the topics of life\, NF
P\, and religious liberty.
Dr. Paula Castagnet\, a biolo
gy professor at AMU\, passed away August 30\, 2011 after a long battle wit
h cancer. Dr. Castagnet graduated with a Ph.D. in 1995 from the Universid
ad Nacional del Sur in Argentina in the area of biochemistry. She then wen
t on to perform postdoctoral research at the Medical College of Wisconsin
(Milwaukee) and at the University of North Dakota. An accomplished labora
tory scientist\, Paula's research interests involved studying the role of
specific proteins involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease\, an
d in the metabolism of brain lipids. She was a valued mentor and classroom
teacher\, particularly for her expertise in the areas of drug metabolism
and pharmacology. Paula joined the faculty of the Department of Biology an
d Chemistry in 2005.

an oatmeal-based meal' – freeing them from the daily scramble for basic su
stenance and enabling them to attend school.

The annual Farm City BBQ will be held this year at a Barron
Collier citrus grove in Ave Maria\, just north of Oil Well Rd by the Arthr

The BBQ i
s a community event that attracts over 1\,100 local business leaders in th
e spirit of building relationships among business and agricultural leaders
. The BBQ will feature fresh steak\, Florida-grown corn on the cob and Imm
okalee Salad dished up by local elected officials and government leaders.<

Drawing from her personal story\, as well as her visits
with teens around the world\, Pam talks about the consequences-physical\,
emotional\, moral and spiritual-of sex outside of marriage. It's been her
experience that\, if given the facts\, today's young people are fully capa
ble of making good\, healthy decisions.
For years\, Pam was on
the 'front lines' as Director of Alpha Women's Center\, a counseling cente
r for women undergoing crisis pregnancies. Her experiences taught her that
before teen pregnancy and STD rates could decline\, attitudes of teens to
ward sex first had to change. Desiring to bring about that change\, Pam st
arted speaking nationally full-time and is in great demand both in the U.S
.A. and in other countries such as Mexico\, Australia\, Ireland\, and Cana
da.
World-class triathletes will be passing through Ave Maria Sa turday\, Jan. 12\, as part of the cycling portion of the full Naples HITS Triathlon. Cyclists are expected beginning around 10:30 a.m. till early af ternoon. Ave Maria is miles 80-86 of the 112-mile cycling leg. Beforehand\ , competitors will have swum 2.4 miles\, and afterward will run a 26.2-mil e marathon.

4). A prolific scholar\, Professor Glendon writes and teaches in the field

heory. Among her works are Abortion and Divorce in Western Law (1989)\, th
e critically acclaimed Rights Talk: The Impoverishment of Political Discou

Professor John M. Rist\, the first occupant of the Fr. Kurt Pritzl Chair of Philosophy at the Catholic University of America\, and author of fifteen books and dozens of importan t scholarly articles\, will give the Third Annual Aquinas Lecture on Monda y\, Jan. 28\, at 5 pm in the Lecture Hall of the Ave Maria University Acad emic Building\, on the theme\, 'Must Morality Be Dependent on God?' The le cture is free and open to the public.
\nProfessor Rist was ed ucated in classics at Trinity College\, Cambridge. He taught Greek at Univ ersity College in the University of Toronto from 1959 to 1969\, and from 1 969 to 1980 was a professor of classics at the University of Toronto. He t aught from 1980 to 1983 as Regius Professor of Classics at the University of Aberdeen\, and returned to the University of Toronto\, where he was pro fessor of classics and philosophy from 1983 to 1996\, with a cross-appoint ment to St. Michael's College from 1983 to 1990. In 1997\, Rist became pro fessor emeritus of the University of Toronto in 1997. He has been part-tim e visiting professor at the Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum in Rome s ince 1998.
\nIn 1976 Rist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada\, and in 1991 he was elected a life member of Clare Hall\, Cambr idge. In 1995 he was the Lady Davis Visiting Professor in Philosophy at th e Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Votapek is the gold medalist of the first Van Cliburn International Piano
Competition and winner of the prestigious Naumberg Award. Born in Milwauk
ee\, he studied at Northwestern University\, the Manhattan School of Music
and the Julliard School. Mr. Votapek has made hundreds of appearances wit
h most of the major American orchestras\, including sixteen appearances wi
th the Chicago Symphony. He has made a special commitment to Latin America
where he has toured every other year for four decades. In the United Stat
es\, his solo recitals have taken place in Carnegie Hall\, Chicago's Orche
stra Hall\, Washington's Kennedy Center\, and on numerous college campuses
. His chamber music experience includes concerts with The Julliard\, Fine
Arts\, New World and Chester String Quartets.
Paul Votapek has
been a member of the Naples (FL) Philharmonic since 1988 and was chosen by
Music Director Christopher Seaman to be its principal clarinetist in 1996
. He has appeared as soloist with the Naples Philharmonic on four occasion

Geoffrey Day is currently in his eighteenth season as a viol
inist with the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. Mr. Day received his Bachelo
r of Music from the University of Michigan\, where he studied with Ruggier
o Ricci\, and earned a Master of Music from Michigan State University as a
student of I-Fu Wang. Since moving to Florida in 1994\, Mr. Day has perfo
rmed frequently as member of the Neapolitan Quartet and as a recitalist wi

\nOne of the fruits of Vatican Council II has been the introduction of the verna cular languages into the Mass. The International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) has been at the forefront all along in rendering the Ro man Missal into English. More recently\, the revision of this translation was seen through to its completion by Monsignor Andrew R. Wadsworth\, an E nglish priest\, when he was appointed Executive Director of ICEL.

Maronite Rite dates back to the time of the Apostles in Antioch (Syria) a

adition and has always been in complete unity with the Bishop of Rome and
the Roman Catholic Church. Mass will be about an hour in length and fulfil
ls the Sunday obligation. A printed guide will be made available so that a
ll may follow along and participate in the Mass.
