 1960 and 1962\, over 14\,000 children were sent out of Cuba alone by despe
 rate parents who feared for their children's future under Castro. Victor d
 iscusses the events and key figures surrounding the exodus\, including the
  roles of the Catholic church and the State Department\, and the extent of
  the CIA's involvement.</span></p>\n<p><span style='font-family: arial\, h
 elvetica\, sans-serif\; font-size: 10pt\;'>A stirring account of the cover
 t effort to smuggle Cuban children into the United States in the aftermath
  of Fidel Castro's rise to power\, Fleeing Castro brings to light the huma
 nitarian program designed to care for the children once they arrived and t
 he hardship and suffering endured by the families who took part in Operati
 on Pedro Pan.</span></p>\n<p><span style='font-family: arial\, helvetica\,
  sans-serif\; font-size: 10pt\;'>From late 1960 until the October 1962 mis
 sile crisis\, 14\,048 unaccompanied Cuban children left their homeland\, t
 he small island suddenly at the center of the Cold War struggle. Their par
 ents\, unable to obtain visas to leave Cuba\, believed a short separation 
 would be preferable to subjecting their offspring to Castro's totalitarian
  Marxist state. For the children\, the exodus began a prolonged and tragic
  ordeal--some didn't see their parents again for years\; a few never did.<
 /span></p>\n<p><span style='font-family: arial\, helvetica\, sans-serif\; 
 font-size: 10pt\;'>Until now\, this chapter of the Cuban Revolution has be
 en relatively obscure. Initially the result of an effort by James Baker\, 
 headmaster of an American school in Cuba who worked closely with the anti-
 Castro underground\, Pedro Pan quickly came to involve the Catholic Church
  in Miami and\, in particular\, Father Bryan Walsh\, who established the C
 uban Children's Program\, the nationwide organization that cared for those
  children without relatives or friends in the United States--almost half o
 f them. The latter program\, in effect until 1981\, was the first to allot
  federal money to private agencies for child care\, an action with far-rea
 ching repercussions for U.S. social policy.</span></p>\n<p><span style='fo
 nt-family: arial\, helvetica\, sans-serif\; font-size: 10pt\;'>Victor Andr
 es Triay traces this story from its political and social origins in Cuba\,
  setting it in the context of the Cold War and describing the roles of the
  organizations involved in Cuba and in the United States. Making use of ex
 tensive interviews with Baker\, Walsh\, and influential underground figure
 s\, as well as personal letters that document the fears and dreams of both
  the parents and the children\, Triay presents this history of Pedro Pan--

 gy professor at AMU\, passed away August 30\, 2011 after a long battle wit
 h cancer.  Dr. Castagnet graduated with a Ph.D. in 1995 from the Universid
 ad Nacional del Sur in Argentina in the area of biochemistry. She then wen
 t on to perform postdoctoral research at the Medical College of Wisconsin 
 (Milwaukee) and at the University of North Dakota.  An accomplished labora
 tory scientist\, Paula's research interests involved studying the role of 
 specific proteins involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease\, an
 d in the metabolism of brain lipids. She was a valued mentor and classroom
  teacher\, particularly for her expertise in the areas of drug metabolism 
 and pharmacology. Paula joined the faculty of the Department of Biology an

 y\, Jan. 28\, at 5 pm in the Lecture Hall of the Ave Maria University Acad
 emic Building\, on the theme\, 'Must Morality Be Dependent on God?' The le

 ucated in classics at Trinity College\, Cambridge. He taught Greek at Univ
 ersity College in the University of Toronto from 1959 to 1969\, and from 1
 969 to 1980 was a professor of classics at the University of Toronto. He t
 aught from 1980 to 1983 as Regius Professor of Classics at the University 
 of Aberdeen\, and returned to the University of Toronto\, where he was pro
 fessor of classics and philosophy from 1983 to 1996\, with a cross-appoint
 ment to St. Michael's College from 1983 to 1990. In 1997\, Rist became pro
 fessor emeritus of the University of Toronto in 1997. He has been part-tim
 e visiting professor at the Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum in Rome s
 ince 1998.</p>\n<p>In 1976 Rist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society 
 of Canada\, and in 1991 he was elected a life member of Clare Hall\, Cambr
 idge. In 1995 he was the Lady Davis Visiting Professor in Philosophy at th

 of the fruits of Vatican Council II has been the introduction of the verna
 cular languages into the Mass. The International Commission on English in 
 the Liturgy (ICEL) has been at the forefront all along in rendering the Ro
 man Missal into English. More recently\, the revision of this translation 
 was seen through to its completion by Monsignor Andrew R. Wadsworth\, an E
 nglish priest\, when he was appointed Executive Director of ICEL.</p>\n<p>
