Public AMU Seminar: Catholicism & Practice of Medicine

The Department of Biology and Chemistry at Ave Maria University announces the inaugural "Paula Castagnet Seminar in Biology and Medicine".

This years seminar will be presented by Dr. Angela Flippin-Trainer, M.D., entitled "A Conversion of Heart and Mind: Living the Catholic Faith in the Practice of Medicine" and will be held Monday, Sept. 17, from 5- 6 p.m. in the lecture hall of the AMU Henkels Academic Building. It is open to AMU students, staff, faculty and members of the public.

Dr. Flippin-Trainer is a Board Certified OB/GYN. She is a member of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a board member of the Southwest Florida Guild of the Catholic Medical Association. A convert to the Catholic Church, Dr. Flippin-Trainer is an authentically pro-life OB/GYN in private practice at CARITAS Obstetrics and Gynecology and Medical Director of the FertilityCare™ Center of South Florida. Her practice undertakes an integrative approach which not only treats illness, but also helps patients make healthy choices in their lives while respecting the dignity of every woman. She volunteers her time as Medical Consultant to Community Pregnancy Clinics and as Natural Family Planning Trainer for the Diocese of Venice. She is a frequent lecturer on the topics of life, NFP, and religious liberty.

Dr. Paula Castagnet, a biology professor at AMU, passed away August 30, 2011 after a long battle with cancer.  Dr. Castagnet graduated with a Ph.D. in 1995 from the Universidad Nacional del Sur in Argentina in the area of biochemistry. She then went on to perform postdoctoral research at the Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee) and at the University of North Dakota.  An accomplished laboratory scientist, Paula's research interests involved studying the role of specific proteins involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease, and in the metabolism of brain lipids. She was a valued mentor and classroom teacher, particularly for her expertise in the areas of drug metabolism and pharmacology. Paula joined the faculty of the Department of Biology and Chemistry in 2005.
