Ernie Mitchell was honored as the Ave Maria Knights of Columbus Council's "Knight of the Year" Wednesday. Mr. Mitchell, who turns 90 this year and has been a knight since 1948, also stepped down as the council's Grand Knight, and was succeeded by Jeff Ball. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush urged Ave Maria University graduates to focus on core values of the traditional family and hard work to combat what he called a “crisis in our culture.” Gov. Ave Maria University seniors gathered outside the oratory Friday evening for the traditional cap toss following the Baccalaureate Mass. Among the graduates, who will receive diplomas at commencement exercises Saturday morning, is the first student to graduate from both the Donahue Academy as well as AMU.

The Ave Maria Stewardship Community District board recessed its meeting Tuesday to resume May 16 when it will consider a specific proposal for refinancing $26 million in bonds that come due in November. The board also heard details of mosquito control plans for Ave Maria this summer.

 A preliminary budget for the new fiscal year, which has no change in assessments for homeowners, is on the agenda for the May 1 meeting of the Ave Maria Stewardship Community District board. There also will be a presentation on the Collier County Mosquito Control Program.

National homebuilder Lennar is poised to enter the Ave Maria market, building homes in the Emerson Park neighborhood later this year, according to the company's division president for southwest Florida, Darin McMurray. Pulte Homes has been the exclusive builder of single-family homes in Ave Maria since the town's inception.
